How to Be the Best “Best Man” (John 3:27-36)

The one who gets the bride is, by definition, the bridegroom. And the bridegroom's friend, his 'best man'—that's me—in place at his side where he can hear every word, is genuinely happy.

I. We need to get excited about the assignment God has given us from heaven.

But to each of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ (Eph. 4:7).

As every man has received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God ( 1 Peter 4:10).

A. The ability, talent, and grace that you possess is God’s gift to you. How you use it is your gift to God.

B. As we use our gifts for God’s glory, He will develop a ministry in us to His bride.

Therefore, seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy we faint not (Cor. 4:1).

And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfill it (Colossians 4:17).

II. We need to be busy in getting things ready for the bridegroom and His bride vs. 28.

You yourselves were there when I made it public that I was not the Messiah but simply the one sent ahead of him to get things ready (The Message Bible).

After these things the LORD appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come (Luke 10:1).

III. We need to stand by his side and hear Him.

And Jonathan, Saul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God. And he said unto him, fear not for the hand of my father shall not find thee, and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee (1 Sam. 23:17).

IV. We need to develop a love for the voice of the bridegroom.

He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

VI. We need to decrease, He must increase vs. 30.

And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel and the Lord anointed thee king over Israel (1 Sam. 15:17).
