What Happens When You Die 


I.  Death is a separation of the spirit and soul from the body 
(Ecclesiastes 12:7; James 2:26).

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it   ……For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life (Job 33:4).

II.  What happens when a Believer dies?

A.  They are gathered by angels and transported to heaven.

And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom 
(Luke 16:22).

B.  They are gathered to their families who are in heaven.

Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people 
(Genesis 25:8).

C.  They are quickly in the presence of Jesus.

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord ( 2 Corinthians 5:8).

But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God 
(Acts 7:55).

III.  What happens when an unbeliever dies?

Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die 
(Ezekiel 18:4).

A.  He becomes conscious of the dark chambers of hell 
(Luke 16:22-31Job 18:4-21).

 the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom 
(Luke 16:22-23).

B.  He can feel unrelenting physical pain.  …I am tormented in this flame 
(Lk. 16:24).
C.  He can pray in hell, even beg, but there is no mercy or comfort in hell.
D.  He can remember with remorse the lost opportunities for salvation.
E.  He will think of his family and desire that they do not follow him to hell.
F.  He will be resurrected to stand at the great white throne judgment 
(Revelation 20:11).
G.  He will be cast in to the lake of fire 
(Revelation 20:13-14).
