Jerusalem the City of God (Luke 19:29-44)
I. God loves the city of Jerusalem, He has chosen to put His name there (1 Kings 11:36).
And unto his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a light always before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.
A. Three reasons it is important to world religions today.
1. It is the third most holy place to the Moslems.
2. It is the most holy city to the Jews.
3. It is the city where Jesus was crucified and holy to Christians.
B. Biblical history and prophecy reveals its importance to God.
And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of (Genesis 22:2).
Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people ( 1 Chronicles 21:22).
Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the Lord appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite (2 Chronicles 3:1).
C. The world’s last battle will be fought over Jerusalem at the return of Jesus Christ!
D. Christ will rule from Jerusalem during the Millennial Kingdom (Revelation 20:4).
E. Heaven and earth will meet in the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:2).
II. God has three assignments for us concerning Jerusalem in these days.
A. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalms 122:6).
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.
B. Stand in the defense of Israel. I will bless them that bless thee and curse them that curse thee and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed (Genesis 12:23).
C. We need to support the Messianic Jews in Israel.
III. We need to learn from the failure of Jerusalem, lest we miss the day of our visitation!
