Practicing Faith in God
(James 2:14-26)
11-20-11
I. Faith without works is dead (vs. 17, 20 and 26).
A. Genuine faith is not determined by what a person says, but by what they do
vs. 14.
All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers
(Matthew 23:3-4).
B. Genuine faith can be seen or demonstrated by activity.
And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee
(Matthew 9:2).
II. What kind of works should be manifested by the activity of our faith (John 14:12)?
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
A. He healed the sick, had mercy on the castaways, dealt with demons and gave.
Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give
(Matthew 10:8 and Luke 10:9).
B. He brought the kingdom of God to those in bondage to the god of this world.
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
C. The work and ministry of Jesus is best defined in his own words (Luke 4:18).
1. Preach the gospel to the poor.
2. To heal the broken hearts.
3. To preach deliverance to the captives.
4. The recovering of sight to the blind.
5. To set at liberty them that are bruised.
6. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
